Instagram architecture in retrospect

How Instagram managed to scale from 0 to 14M users with very few staff between 2010 and 2011 with a stack that stayed pretty simple (Django <3).

/Be careful not to tell yourself that this is THE stack just by referring to Instagram's success.

There are things that have aged in the meantime, others that were only relevant in their specific context, and others for which there are alternatives that would have been just as relevant even back then.

On the other hand, it's a good example that demonstrates once again that you shouldn't copy the architectures of the web behemoths at all costs, with a view to hypothetical future scalability.
